Blackness isn’t one story, one accent, or one country.

Growing up in the UK, I realised a lot of what people think Blackness is comes from one place, one perspective, one lens. Social media, school, TV — it all shapes how people see us, and sometimes it makes Black diaspora people feel like we have to prove where we belong.

There’s Black British history.
There’s Caribbean history.
There’s African history.
There’s American history.

All of it matters. None of it cancels the other out.

We can’t move forward if we only recognise one version of who we are.

This happened back in September 2023 in Peckham.

From what was reported, the situation started over a refund dispute in a hair shop. The full conversation wasn’t clear on camera, but the footage shows the argument escalating and the man putting his hands on the woman, grabbing her by the neck during the altercation.

The video went viral, protests happened outside the shop, and people have been debating it ever since — about the refund, about who was wrong, and about how Black women are treated in these situations.

Even now, people are still arguing about it, still blaming her, still missing the point.

Colourism isn’t just something we see in the media or workplaces in the UK — sometimes it starts much closer to home.

The way we speak about skin tone in our own households can shape how young people see themselves for years to come.

This conversation matters. Because colourism isn’t just about “preference”, it’s part of a deeper system that has affected our community for generations.

That’s also why the spaces I’m building — through my culture hub and my business — are about celebrating all shades and rewriting the narratives we’ve been given.

When you grow up navigating microaggressions, silence, erasure and pressure to shrink yourself, rest becomes resistance. Reflection becomes strategy. Healing becomes power.

This is why I build.

Not just products.
Not just events.
But spaces where we can exhale.
Spaces where we don’t have to explain ourselves.
Spaces where we can repair in community.

Growing up as a Black girl in the UK, I learned early that there are things you’re expected to just “shrug off.”
Things your white friends never face. The difference in treatment. The silence when you speak up.
This place loves to call itself “polite” and “different,” but it hides the same patterns in new forms.

I’ve watched our culture copied, exploited, dismissed. I’ve heard things I shouldn’t have heard, seen things I shouldn’t have seen, and watched our pain fall on deaf ears. We’re celebrated when convenient, ignored when honest, and pushed aside when we demand respect.

If we don’t build something for ourselves, no one will. That’s why I started IsleBlaque — out of frustration, and out of hope.

Hope for a space where Black people can connect, thrive, and build economic and cultural power. A hub that links us across the diaspora — different cultures, different countries, but tied together by history, rhythm and resilience. The differences are beautiful; the connections are real.

We’ve been divided too long: families split, self-hatred eating at our men and our communities, money spent where we’re not valued, neighbourhoods we built gentrified around us, voices ignored. These are the issues IsleBlaque aims to face — honestly and unapologetically.

IsleBlaque stands on accountability, wisdom, confidence, humility, selflessness, togetherness, intelligence, and common sense. Traits that remind us who we are and who we can become — individually and collectively.

This is bigger than one person, one city, or one country. This is for Black people across the UK and the world who want to reclaim unity, pride, and power.

So listen: don’t wait. Don’t shrink. Don’t apologise. Start now. Build now. We deserve communities that honour, protect, and uplift us.

We’ve survived. We’ve thrived. Now, together, we can build something unstoppable.
